We are pleased to report the completion of two new bridges on the Blue Trail at Adams Farm, which were built by the Trails Committee and their volunteers, working under the direction of Trails Committee Chairman Gary Riggott. Gary deserves a great deal of credit and thanks for his fine planning and execution of this project from design to completion. Twenty-five volunteers, a combination of adults and youths, contributed their time and talents to create these aids to hikers that will be appreciated for many years to come. The bridges now allow hikers to use this trail without getting their feet wet.
We hope the new bridges will encourage more Walpole residents to take a hike on the Blue Trail, which starts at the gravel road just past the barn. A few hundred yards past the tree line, the trail turns to the right, leading to the new construction. Once across the new bridges, following the trail through the back meadow and on to the gravel road again will bring hikers back to the barn. (Maps are available at the barn kiosk.) This trip is approximately 2 miles in length.
This effort adds to the long list of area citizen volunteers who have stepped up to make enhancements to the Farm: the razing of the pig barn, the construction of the new barn/pavilion, the creation of the Community Garden and the Woman’s Club Butterfly Garden, and more coming soon with the Norwood Garden Club’s landscaping plans for the barn and North Street entrance to the Farm.
Additionally, we must thank the many area residents who have donated to the Friends of Adams Farm to make all of this possible. Our membership now stands at over 300 families, past and present, including those who contributed specifically to the bridge project. Not to be forgotten in this list of credits are the various Town Boards, Departments and Committees that have given us assistance and encouragement in all areas of their involvement.
Adams Farm, located at 999 North Street, is a combination of Town-owned land, Norfolk Aggie land, New England Forestry land, NSTAR land and private dedicated forest land amounting to over 700 acres, with upwards of 15 miles of trails to be explored. It is there for the use and enjoyment of area residents. Visitors are welcome (no charge) from sunrise to sunset any time of the year.
