COURT ACTION

Many complaints are not resolved by sending the party an enforcement letter; therefore, resulting in this office seeking complaints in district or superior court. Complaints that are brought to court, in most cased, are very time consuming and tedious. During this process, it may appear as if the inspectors are not getting an enforcement action against the alleged violator; but in fact, the case is tied up in court. At this point, we would like to be able to inform the complainant of the status of the complaint.

NON-CRIMINAL DEPOSITION

Another option besides taking the parties involved in a complaint to court is the non-criminal deposition ticketing procedure for violation of the towns' zoning and general bylaw's. The fines implemented for zoning by-law violations are $300.00 per day, per violation. Every day the violation exists, constitutes a separate violation.

WHAT IS A BUILDING PERMIT?

A building permit is a license that grants legal permission to start construction of a building, structure, remodeling, alteration and addition.

WHAT CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS NEED A PERMIT?

  • New structures / buildings
  • Roofing / siding
  • Prefabricated structures
  • Additions/ Alterations/ Remodeling/ Renovations
  • Electrical
  • Swimming pools
  • Demolition
  • Fire Alarms/ Sprinklers
  • Miscellaneous residential uses, i.e., decks, fireplaces, satellite dishes
  • Temporary building i.e. Mobile homes, construction trailers, or storage boxes, tents, sheds (larger than 120 square feet), etc.

If you proposed activity is not listed above, please talk with one of us to verify permit requirements.

Permits allow the enforcement of codes that have been adopted by the state. No matter what the scope of the project may be, the enforcement of codes is to protect the public safety and welfare. The Building Department is acting to insure safe construction within the town.

HOW DOES A PERSON GET A PERMIT?

The first step in the permit process is to submit an application along with the appropriate paperwork (plans, affidavits, etc.). The paperwork for various construction projects may vary from project to project.

Permit applications must be filled out completely or the application will not be accepted. If a particular item is not applicable to your project, then fill in the appropriate block with "N/A".

CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS

In all cases, construction drawings (showing what you are going to build and how you are going to build it) are required. The drawing must be of an architectural nature and must be to scale. Residential drawings DO NOT have to be professionally drawn, however, we must be able to determine what is being constructed. Drawings must show dimensions, framing plans, floor plans, foundation plan and elevations, if applicable.

PROPOSED PLOT PLAN

When constructing new buildings/structures and additions, the submission of a proposed plot plan is required, showing the proposed location of the new building / structure or addition along with the proposed distances to setbacks from the property lines.
