Castleberry Food Recalls

The Castleberry Food Company first initiated a voluntary recall of certain products on July 18th, 2007 after four persons in Indiana and Texas developed botulism following consumption of food products manufactured at the plant. The company has since expanded the recall to all codes of all products manufactured at the plant.

Recalled canned products include chili with and without beans, beef stew, corned beef hash, hot dog chili sauce, Brunswick stew, barbecue pork in barbecue sauce and dog food. A list of all brand names and sizes of meat and meatless products including dog food subject to the recall is attached. The canned meat products bear the establishment number “EST. 195” inside the USDA seal of inspection.

Botulism is a serious illness that can be fatal. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle weakness.

People who have eaten these products and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Some of the recalls are the following Big Y brands:

  • Chili with Beans 15 oz UPC Barcode 18894 80425
  • Chili no beans 15 oz UPC Barcode 18894 80424
  • Corned Beef Hash 15 oz UPC Barcode 18894 80225

Consumers should:

  • Check all canned goods carefully to ensure that the recalled products are identified and disposed of
  • NOT Open or USE recalled products even if the can and/or product appears to look and smell good
  • DISCARD any of the recalled product by removing the label prior to disposal (and just returning the label to the store for a refund) or returning the product to the store to ensure that product is not redirected to family, friends or charitable food facilities
  • Do not feed to pets

Deface or remove labeling and double wrap in plastic bags that are tightly closed before placing in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash

Any one reporting symptoms possibly associated with suspect product should seek medical attention immediately.
