Stormwater Management

NEWS

The Conservation Commission is now regulating the approved Stormwater Management and Erosion Control Bylaw. Please review Bylaw and regulations for compliance.

The Conservation Commission was established in 1967 under the Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) Ch. 40, 8C. The mandate of the Conservation Commission was to protect natural resources and watershed resources for the Town.

Wetlands Protect Act MGL ch. 131, 40
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts enacted the Wetlands Protection Act in 1963 to protect wetlands and bordering resource areas from potential loss to development. Town Conservation Commissions are required to implement the wetland regulations at the local level.

The Rivers Protection Act
The Rivers Act was incorporated into the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act in 1996 to strengthen the protection of rivers, perennial streams and their riverfront areas.
The Riverfront Area is the area of land between a river's mean annual high-water line measured horizontally outward from the river and a parallel line located 200-feet away.

Walpole Wetlands Bylaw
The Town of Walpole Wetlands Bylaw additionally protects resource areas defined as any bank, wetland, stream, river, pond, vernal pool, or any land bordering thereon, or any land subject to flooding.
