You may obtain applications for the following from the Board of Assesors Office:

Abatements

What are they?  An abatement is a reduction of a property tax based upon a reduction of the assessed value of the property.

What are the reasons for an abatement? Overvaluation or disproportionate valuation.

Who may apply?The property owner applies each year in which there is a dispute regarding valuation.

When to apply? Applications for abatement must be filed by the payment due date of the 3rd quarter tax bill.

Where to apply?The Board of Assessors’ Office.

Exemptions

What are they?A mechanism to excuse a portion of the tax obligation of a property owner who meets certain criteria established by State law.

Who may apply?Certain taxpayers who meet the State criteria for allowing exemptions, such as: elderly over 70 years of age with financial needs, individuals with certain disabilities, disabled Veterans, etc.Please contact the Assessors’ office for further information and the complete listing of groups included in the program.

Deferrals

What is a deferral?A deferral is a postponement of all or part of the tax obligation of an elderly property owner who meets the criteria established by State law.

Who may apply?Taxpayers who are 65 years or older and meet the financial requirements.Please contact the Board of Assessors’ Office for requirements.

When to apply? Contact the Assessors’ Office to find out the deadline for filing an application.
