Lower prices for Walpole Power Choice participants beginning in December

WALPOLE, MA – The Town of Walpole is pleased to announce that Walpole Power Choice, the Town’s aggregate electricity program, will offer lower prices for all participants starting in December 2020. The lower prices are the result of a new 36-month electricity supply contract with Dynegy, which will take effect as Walpole’s current contract with NextEra ends.

Walpole Power Choice includes two electricity choices, Power Choice Standard, which is the default program offering, and Power Choice Green, which is a 100% renewable energy option. Beginning with December 2020 meter reads, the new price for Power Choice Standard will be 9.945 cents/kWh, which is 1.636 cents/kWh lower than the current price. The new price for Power Choice Green will be 10.749 cents/kWh, which is 1.138 cents/kWh lower than the current price. The majority of participants in Walpole Power Choice are enrolled in Power Choice Standard. The new prices are anticipated to be lower than Eversource’s winter residential Basic Service price, which will take effect on January 1, 2021. However, Eversource’s Basic Service prices change every 6 months for residential and commercial/small business customers and every 3 months for industrial/large business customers and future prices are not known. As a result, savings compared with Eversource’s Basic Service cannot be guaranteed.

The new prices will go into effect with December 2020 electricity meter reads. Participants will first see the new program price and Dynegy listed as their supplier on their January 2021 electricity bills. The new Walpole Power Choice prices are long-term prices and will not change before December 2023. This long-term price stability is a key benefit to Walpole’s program and makes it different from Eversource’s Basic Service prices and from many offers in the marketplace. The new prices apply to all rate classes, including residential, small business, and large business accounts.

No action is required from electricity customers currently enrolled in Walpole Power Choice. All active program participants will be automatically enrolled into the new contract with Dynegy with their December meter read, and they will be enrolled in the same program option they have in the current NextEra contract.

Participants may enroll, opt up to Power Choice Green, change back to Power Choice Standard, or opt out of the program at any time. Those who wish to do so before the contract with Dynegy takes effect should submit their request by November 23, 2020. Requests can be made via the program website, WalpolePowerChoice.com, or by contacting customer support at 844-379-9936.

Tax-exempt account holders will need to submit tax-exemption documentation to Dynegy to retain their tax-exempt status in the program. This documentation must be submitted to Dynegy even if it was submitted previously to Eversource and NextEra. Information about where to submit tax-exemption documentation is available on WalpolePowerChoice.com.

Walpole Power Choice is a group buying program for electricity from the Town of Walpole for Walpole residents and businesses. Massachusetts State law allows cities and towns to choose the electricity supplier for their electricity customers rather than having the local electric utility buy their electricity. Walpole Power Choice offers long-term pricing and consumer protections, such as the ability to leave the program at any time with no penalty or fees. Participating in the program changes the price that Eversource uses to calculate the supply charge portion of participants’ electricity bills. Electricity delivery charges are not impacted by participation in Walpole Power Choice.
