Black Earth

The Walpole Waste Reduction Committee is happy to announce that Walpole is joining concerned surrounding towns of Norwood, Canton, Sharon, Wakefield, Bedford and many other towns, in diverting food waste away from trash through food waste composting. Black Earth will now plan to provide service directly to interested Walpole residents at a reasonable cost. The more residents who sign up, the more that Black Earth will be able to lower the cost. Black Earth is currently servicing about 80 towns in Massachusetts.

A large majority of you said you were very likely or likely to participate in a food waste pickup service for a modest fee once the service is available.

Exciting news! You may now go to the Black Earth website and complete the registration process. Every other week collection for $15.99/month or $89.99/6 Months. Reduce Your Waste by 30%. Learn more at blackearthcompost.com and see attached flyer.

All those signing on to the program will receive a free starter kit, including curbside bin and liners, courtesy of the Walpole Health Department using awarded MA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Recycling Dividends Program (RDP) grant funding.

Food waste makes up 20% to 40% of the waste for a typical household. To take the food waste out of the trash stream and compost it, keep it out of landfills and incinerators, and produce black gold, is something individuals can do to work towards zero waste and begin to make a difference for our planet.

For those interested in backyard composting, this is always an option. You can pick up a compost bin at Town Hall, Dept. of Health, for $25 ($61 value). The main difference between backyard composting and commercial pick up, is that a longer list of food waste items, that are not appropriate for backyard composting, is accepted by a pick-up service like Black Earth. See list of 'Yay and Nay' food waste items attached to this post.

Here’s to food waste composting, reducing greenhouse gases, and producing ‘black gold.’ Together, we can make a difference!
