Walpole Water Rates

Walpole's water rate is expressed as a rate per 1,000 cubic feet of water.  1,000 cubic feet of water is approximately 7,500 gallons.  The typical family uses approximately 12,000 cubic feet of water per year.

Since the passage of Proposition 2 1/2 in the 1980's, the town quickly moved it's water rate to fully support the Water Department without any subsidy from the property tax.  This approach in addition to helping the town's fiscal position, is also favored by the state Department of Environmental Protection to make sure that water is priced at its full and true cost.  The water rates currently cover all direct costs of the water system and the overhead activities provided by other town departments such as billing, vehicle maintenance, etc...

Water from a municipal water system is actually quite a bargain.  A gallon of store brand generic "spring" water costs around $0.59 per gallon - that equates to $4,425.00 per 1,000 cubic feet - and the municipal water system delivers directly to your home.
