Battery Disposal

Button cell batteries CAN now be put out with the trash. Beginning in 2018 mercury was taken out of button cell batteries by the battery manufacturers. Our Mercury Recovery Program through WIN Mercury Recovery  was focused on batteries that contained mercury. We continued our collection of button-cell batteries and our rebate program for 2019 and 2020 and ended it the end of December 2020. We were told by NEMOA (New England Waste Management Official's Association) that the waste stream was essentially free of mercury containing button-cell batteries at that time. Through all the years WIN Mercury Recovery Program collected button-cell batteries, they collected close to 4,000,000. During the time the WIN Mercury Recovery Program had the Button-cell battery rebate program they were able to give to non-profit organizations in their participating communities $296,000.00 dollars.

All alkaline batteries are all mercury free so they can be thrown out with the trash.

All rechargeable/lithium batteries CANNOT be placed in your household trash and should be disposed of at our annual Household Hazardous Waste Day or through other collections.
